End Credits #81: Cinema's 2018 Lost Treasures R. Lee Ermey, Miloš Forman

These are some of Cinema's sad departures of 2018 taken from my personal notes soon after the events took place:

The solid and dependable character actor R. Lee Ermey has sadly died at age 74. He was known for his typically intense and memorable characterisations of authority figures in films such as The Boys in Company C (1978), Purple Hearts (1984), Full Metal Jacket (1987, as Gny. Sgt. Hartman, easily his most authentic and exceptional film role and performance), Mississippi Burning (1988), Toy Soldiers (1991), Sommersby (1993), Murder in the First (1995), Se7en (1995), Dead Man Walking (1995), Switchback (1997), Scenes of the Crime (2001), The Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2003), and perhaps most recognisably for providing the voice behind the character 'Army Sarge' in the Toy Story films. R. Lee Ermey (March 24, 1944 - April 15, 2018) R.I.P.

Sadly, we've lost another titanic force from the cinematic arts, Czech director Miloš Forman has died at age 86. He was a two time Academy Award winner for Best Director, once for One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest (1975), and again for Amadeus (1984), both Best Picture winners as well. In addition he was nominated in the same category for The People vs. Larry Flynt (1996). Other critically lauded and publicly successful directorial accomplishments included Ragtime (1981) and Man on the Moon (1999). His first film after coming to the U.S. was the under-seen brilliant little comedy/drama Taking Off (1971), another critical success. Even lesser known by the general public are his artistically masterful examinations of human foibles made in his native Czechoslovakia The Loves of a Blonde (1965) and The Fireman's Ball (1967). Miloš Forman (February 18, 1932 - April 13, 2018) R.I.P.
